5 Life Lessons I learned from my Kids

As a parent I try to impart wisdom upon my children daily with my “life lessons”.  But I think  I might actually learn more from them, than they learn from me.  They are so honest with themselves, but somewhere along the way of becoming an adult I think I lost this innocence.  So here are five ways that I think I need to be more like my  kids.

From my children I have learned….

1. It’s OK to show emotion.
As adults I think we feel that we shouldn’t show excitement, or sadness, or fear…or anything else.  At least I feel that I need to be “together” all the time.  But kids are so much more honest and genuine.  When they’re sad, they show it.  Especially my daughter – boy can that girl wail!  When they’re upset they don’t try to hide it.  When they are excited –  they jump around.  It’s probably healthier to get all that stuff out than try to keep it inside.  This is definitely one way I should try to act more like a child.

2.  It’s acceptable to ask questions.
Another way their innocence shows is that they never feel too intimidated to ask a question.  Whether it’s at the PTA, the Dr.’s office, or the bank, I can feel pressured to not ask questions.  Yet my son has looked right at me before and said, “Mom, I don’t know what you are saying.” Does that make him look foolish?  No. On the contrary, I usually realize I’m the one that’s not communicating very well when he doesn’t understand.  I teach them to speak up, yet I don’t always practice what I preach.  I could definitely learn from him.

3. Everyone needs a break from reality.
My kids spend a lot of their time playing.  They have their own set of pressures, probably more than I did as a child, and yet they are able to set it all aside and leave reality to play and just have fun.  They can lose themselves in a game of super heroes, or ‘My Little Ponies’, or whatever it may be that particular day.  Yet as adults, how often do we set aside our responsibilities to simply have fun? I’m not suggesting we shirk our responsibilities and whip out the barbies; but how about taking a break to go to lunch with girlfriends,  go see a movie, or get a pedicure?  Even when we’re busy – especially when we’re busy –  that’s when it’s a necessity.  It’s important to set the work aside and take time to “play”.

4.  Honesty is the best policy.
Now wait a minute, isn’t that something that I taught them? Well yes, but in away they are more honest than I am.  If someone hurts their feelings – they tell them.  That’s not something I do very often.  I’d be more likely to mask my feelings and bottle it up inside. My kids are eager to help someone in need, but they don’t put up with getting stepped on either.  They have very honest relationships with their friends and peers, and don’t put up with being mistreated  – – but they are quick to forgive and forget as well.  I think our “grown-up” relationships could use a good dose of this childishness. Let someone know when they’ve wronged you, and then get over it and go have some fun together.

5.  Sometimes you just need to be goofy.
Things can get awful serious around here, especially when my husband is gone and we are overly busy.  I don’t think I could manage it all without my to-do lists and schedules.  However, there are times that you just need to have a giggle-fest.   My kids love to make up silly jokes, and they love it when I make up silly jokes, too.  Just watching them laugh can make me laugh. There is definitely a time to be serious. There is a time to work hard and concentrate on responsibilities, but there is also a time to roll around on the floor and laugh.  Laughter truly is the best medicine.

I think I learn something new from my children each and every day –  which is probably true for every mom out there.  But these 5 lessons are the most important ways that I think we should act more like children.   Sometimes it would do us all good to be a little more childish!
